There are two types of automobile fuel pumps. No matter mechanical fuel pump or electric one, both of fuel pumps gasoline from the vehicle’s fuel tank to the engine and distributes fuel at low pressure to the carburetor or to the fuel injection system at high pressure. The carburetor engine uses a low pressure pump, which is located outside the fuel tank. An advantage of the electric fuel pump is that it reduces fuel consumption because it has no resistance associated with mechanical drive and the electronic control unit (ECU) can monitor the fuel supply more accurately.
